Taxi WAVs Vs West Suffolk Council
As a spokesperson for West Suffolk Hackney and Private Hire drivers I would like to thank James Sheen and many people in the We Love Bury St Edmunds Group for your support over the last year and coverage of our taxi awareness parade.
West Suffolk Council have after seeing the results of last years Wheelchair Access Survey concluded our area has more than the national average of Wheelchair vehicles as we always maintained and recognised the fact that affordable electric vehicles and infrastructure are not an option at this stage.
They also recognised the fact that not all disabilities and older people can negotiate a large wheelchair vehicle safely and would much prefer a saloon car.
This in no way is viewed as a victory for taxi drivers as in the long run as technology advances we are aiming to provide a safe green fleet for people of all ages and disabilities.
West Suffolk Council are withholding the full report of 140 pages on last year’s consultation and survey until 23rd March so all I can say at this stage is something in it has moved them to see the whole picture at last and put forward these proposals.
I cannot criticise Andy Drummond for working with us on this issue and Jennifer Eves for all her hard work to bring everything together although the licensing department continue to be very obstructive to any issues the taxi trade try to liaise on.
