State of Roads in West Suffolk – Impact on Residents and Tourism
Dear West Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council & Suffolk Roadways
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of the roads in West Suffolk, particularly the increasing number of potholes that are causing significant damage to vehicles and posing a risk to public safety. As a concerned resident, I am questioning the council’s potential liability for negligence in this matter, as well as the processes by which road repair contracts are awarded and the materials used.
According to the West Suffolk Council Petition Scheme April 2021[1], petitions have been submitted regarding traffic regulations and parking policies. However, the issue of road maintenance, specifically the increasing number of potholes, warrants immediate attention. As a Council, you are also looking to increase housing by 2030, yet it appears you are not even able to maintain the infrasturcture that already exists.
With the revenue generated from road fund licences, Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Highways should have the necessary funds to address these issues. As a responsible council, it is crucial to ensure that these funds are being allocated appropriately and effectively for road repairs.
I am particularly concerned about the process by which road repair work is put out to tender, and the criteria used to decide which contractors are engaged. It is vital to consider whether cost is taking precedence over long-term endurance and quality. With the current state of our roads, it appears that the focus is on short-term fixes rather than investing in lasting solutions.
The materials used for road repairs are also an area of concern. Are the materials of the highest quality and durability, ensuring that our roads can withstand the wear and tear of daily traffic? With our region being a popular tourist destination, it is crucial that our infrastructure reflects a commitment to maintaining a positive image for visitors.
Considering the impact of poorly maintained roads on residents, tourists, and the local economy, I urge the West Suffolk Council & Suffolk County Council to prioritize road maintenance and address the pothole crisis. I request a transparent overview of the processes involved in awarding contracts, the criteria for selecting contractors, and the materials used for road repairs. Additionally, please provide information regarding the council’s potential liability for negligence, as well as steps being taken to mitigate risks associated with poor road conditions.
It is my hope that the West Suffolk Council takes these concerns seriously and implements measures to ensure the long-term quality and safety of our roads. As with a Freedom of Information request, I require a reply within 20 working days.
We are watching you
Sincerely,
The We Love Bury St Edmunds! Group
