Memories of, Schools, Tollgate & Lake Avenue
Tollgate Primary
Best memories are from after we moved to Lake Avenue. The school was Tollgate Primary, so it was Shanks’ pony.
Grammar School
Growing up in Bury St Edmunds, I had a wonderful childhood. Every day was an adventure and it seemed like there were endless possibilities with my friends by my side!
Grammar school meant that our little group had to take the bus to St. Andrews Street every morning, but we made sure to make it fun – seeing who could spot the most interesting sights along the way or daring each other to run through town or Abbey Gardens instead of walking. On days when I felt especially daring, I’d even strap on my roller skates and head down Lake Avenue for some shopping!
At KEGS things changed a bit; biking replaced bus rides as our favourite mode of transportation. We’d spend hours exploring everything from Station Hill all the way-out past Mulley’s’ Coach Trip stop (where we would sometimes save our pocket money for football matches). But no matter what, weekends were always reserved for visiting family in Sandy Barracks – which usually involved taking the train since Dad’s motorbike had been bitten by something mad!
It wasn’t until much later that he got his first car – which was an absolute thrill because suddenly all those places we used to dream about going became reality, packed into one small sidecar!
From thrilling bike rides around town to cosy journeys spent with family members far away, every memory is important part of my life growing up in Chelmsford and just thinking about them brings me right back home again.
Not very comfortable with so many bags in between your legs, but we survived – my sister and me in the sidecar and Mum behind Dad.
