Memories of Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds
A Trip Down Memory Lane
I was born in Bury, England in 1943, and I have visited Abbey Gardens my whole life. My family lived on Churchgate Street, so my first memories are of being in the gardens with my parents. Back then, there were no animals, just a maypole, swings, and a slide. The maypole is still there, and it brings back happy memories of simpler times.
Bowling with Family
My grandfather and uncle loved to play bowls. When we visited my parents near the Abbey Gate, we would play on the lawns. The greens were perfect, and everyone enjoyed playing there. Even though I could not play until the games were over, I loved watching. We brought our son with us, and it became a family tradition. I’m not sure if the greens are still there, but the memories will always be with me.
The Band Stand On Sundays, people gathered to listen to musicians at the bandstand. The music brought everyone together, and it created a magical atmosphere. Everyone felt connected by the music.
Cloister Gardens
In the Cloister Gardens, there used to be a beautiful copper beech tree. It was a perfect spot to relax with friends and hope no relatives walked by. Sadly, the tree is gone now.
A Scout Jamboree
In the 1950s, the 5th Bury Troop had a Scout Jamboree in the gardens. They set up camp near the old Dovecote and had a weekend full of adventure. The scouts explored the gardens and had lots of fun. One of the scouts returned years later with his father, and they walked through the Cloister Gardens, listening to music and enjoying the sun. The memories of the past were still strong.
