At the heart of our parish is one person and two churches.
The person is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He lived 2000 years ago, was crucified for us and rose from the dead.
The two churches are St Mary’s and St Peter’s. St Mary’s has its roots in the ancient Benedictine Abbey, and is over 700 years old. St Peter’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008. The two churches serve the southern and western parts of the town of Bury St Edmunds.
Both churches are flourishing, with a combined electoral roll of 295, and with about 270 people who worship at our different services on a usual Sunday. We are able to offer a range of different Sunday services.
The parish runs a number of other activities: a parent and toddler group, lunches and teas for older people, men and boys choir, ladies choir, girls choir, music groups, flower arranging group, socials and concerts. St Mary’s is also the civic church for Bury St Edmunds, and the town St George’s day parade, Jankyn Smyth, Battle of Britain and Remembrance day services are held here. We have a once a month parish prayer meeting as well as a monthly parish praise meeting.
We have groups for men and women. We also have a wide variety of small groups which meet in people’s homes. They are a way for people to get to know each other and to grow in their Christian faith.
We have activities and groups for young people of all ages: along with crèche, Sunday school and choir, we run a holiday club, occasional children’s workshops, and groups for young people (age 11 and upwards).
For people wishing to find out more about the Christian faith, we regularly offer short introductory courses and longer Alpha and Christianity Explored courses.
