Cartwright Bros is a family run business which was started back in 1929 by brothers Matt and Joe in a house in Rous Road, Newmarket called “Avondale”, soon after they were joined by their brother John.
The three brothers primarily charged accumulator batteries (which were used in radios). Twice a week they would deliver the charged batteries and collect the empty ones to customers in Newmarket and the surrounding villages.
As televisions became more popular, Joe took on repairs, this was a much needed service and the business grew from there, with Matt taking on electrical installations and John doing the office work.
It was not long before the business outgrew the house in Rous Road and they rented 40 The High Street, Newmarket. In 1951 they had the opportunity to buy Primrose House (38&40 High Street) which was the former home of Lord Rosebery race horse owner ex prime minister. The business is still run from 40 High Street today and many of the original features can still be seen within the shop.
To this day Cartwright Bros is still run by family members, with Matt passing it to his son Ken and John to his son Bob.
It is now run by Bobs 2 sons Gary and Tim and in 2015 their nephew Rob became a director too.
We believe this to be totally unique in todays High Street.
The business has been a N.I.C.E.I.C approved electrical contractor for over 70 years, which is a very rare occurrence.
Our business delivers a unique and personal service which we pride ourselves on, providing electrical installation and repairs as well as an array of spares and unusual gifts.
