Before qualifying as an Alexander Technique teacher, I worked in the legal profession. My first job was office junior, making the coffee and doing the filing. After years of studying alongside working, I qualified as a solicitor.
I teach the Alexander Technique both one-to-one and in groups. I undertook a full time,3-year training course to qualify. I have been teaching the AT for 11 years. It is my sole occupation. I am a member of STAT (Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique) and am fully insured.
I have always been fit and active and a keen walker. However, in my late 20’s I began to be troubled with lower back pain. I tried everything to alleviate it. I received excellent treatments and manual therapies, but the benefits and improvement I got, didn’t last, and the back pain inevitably returned.
I took up Alexander Technique lessons. After my first lesson, I was hooked. I left the lesson feeling light and free and felt completely different. I carried on with regular lessons and began to see that the back pain was largely caused by how I was using myself in everyday activities. After a number of lessons and seeing the improvement and changes in myself, I decided to quit my job and to train as an Alexander Technique teacher. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made.
When I’m not working, I relish being outdoors as much as possible. I’m a keen walker and gardener. At the tender age of 50, I took up tennis. I love it, but it’s probably too late to become a Wimbledon hopeful!
I’m more physically active and stronger now, in my 50’s than I was in my 30’s. I ascribe this to the Alexander Technique. I can now do heavy tasks which I’d have shied away from in the past, because I know how to do them without injuring myself.
I’m a people lover. I like being with people. That’s why this work suits me. I get to help people feel well again and enjoy their lives. We have fun along the way too. What’s not to like?
‘Find a job you love and you’ll never have to work again’. I have and feel so lucky.
